The Wenela Border Post in the Zambezi region is set to be officially inaugurated as a 24-hour port of entry between Zambia and Namibia on Tuesday.
The Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security said the move will assist in curbing illegal movement, drugs, and contraband, while also promoting trade.
“In the same vein, it will promote lawful trade for economic prosperity and national sovereignty,” said the Ministry’s Executive Director, Etienne Maritz.
“Due to the opening of the 24-hour Border Post, transport companies are urged to temporarily cease the movement of trucks and other vehicles from morning until afternoon. Instead, they should use the Ngoma Border post or alternative routes.”
The border serves as an economic and logistical route for the Walvis Bay-Ndola-Lumbumbashi corridor, linking Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The development comes as Namibia and Botswana opened the Trans-Kalahari/Mamuno border post in March as a 24-hour operation, a move expected to boost economic development in the region.
Situated in Namibia’s Omaheke region, the border post is a crucial link between the port of Walvis Bay and Botswana’s capital, Gaborone.
The launch of the 24-hour operation at the border post is expected to bring about various changes in the transport sector.
