Bank Windhoek has classified N$147 million in sustainable financing across 97 loans during its 2026 financial year, as the bank works towards a N$300 million sustainable finance target.
The financing, averaging approximately N$1.5 million per loan, was primarily channelled through the bank’s Sustainability Loan product, which supports qualifying businesses and individuals investing in environmentally and socially focused projects.
Bank Windhoek Chief Treasurer Ian Erlank said the financing reflects the bank’s focus on supporting smaller-scale sustainability initiatives while meeting its sustainability-linked bond commitments.
“Sustainable finance is two-dimensional, and it must therefore include both environmental and socially related projects. By unlocking N$147 million through 97 loans, we are demonstrating that economic objectives can be sought alongside environmental and social impact,” Erlank said.
He said the bank remained committed to achieving its N$300 million target, with the N$147 million classified during the financial year equivalent to 49% of that amount.
“We are proud of this progress and remain firmly focused on reaching our N$300 million target,” he said.
Erlank said the bank had identified gaps in sourcing and financing projects that qualify under its sustainability criteria, which had affected progress during the financial year.
He said addressing these challenges would remain a priority as the bank seeks to increase lending to eligible projects.
During the new financial year, Bank Windhoek plans to increase market awareness of its sustainable financing products and accelerate lending towards its N$300 million target.
The bank said its sustainable finance approach combines environmental and social considerations with traditional lending objectives, supporting investments intended to contribute to Namibia’s long-term economic development.
Erlank said Bank Windhoek would continue exploring opportunities to expand its sustainable financing offerings and strengthen its position in the market.
