The Namibia Tourism Board (NTB) and MTC have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing digital transformation in the country’s tourism sector.

Speaking at the event, NTB Chief Executive Officer Sebulon Chicalu said the agreement would support NTB’s efforts to enhance service delivery, improve efficiency and strengthen Namibia’s competitiveness as a destination.

“What does this MoU with MTC signify for the Namibia Tourism Board? It signifies supplementing NTB’s efforts in achieving certain strategic objectives such as enhancing stakeholder satisfaction, promoting social and economic inclusion in the tourism sector, improving service excellence, and improving internal operational efficiency,” he said.

Chicalu added that the partnership would also give NTB access to MTC’s technologies, including 5G, eSIM, Wi-Fi hotspots, mobile applications and VR/AR.

“Better data and insights through shared analytics and the upgrading of the Tourism Data Management System will allow NTB to monitor travel trends, manage tourism levies, and enhance overall service delivery,” he said.

He said the agreement will also enhance the visitor experience through seamless connectivity, digital payment options and smart travel alerts.

“Global competitiveness and enhancement of the Destination Namibia brand positions Namibia as a digitally prepared tourism destination, in line with Vision 2030 and NDP6 priorities,” Chicalu said.

The MoU was signed at the official launch of inbound eSIM technology, which Chicalu described as a milestone for Namibia.

“For more than thirty years, the conventional SIM card system has been central to mobile communication in Namibia. Today, as we embrace eSIM technology services, we are not just celebrating the future of connectivity but also the new opportunities it presents for industries like travel and tourism,” he said.

Chicalu stressed that connectivity is central to visitor experience and to Namibia’s tourism competitiveness.

“It is without debate that connectivity is central to any visitor or traveller. It is a value proposition that enhances Namibia’s competitiveness as a destination for both tourism and business travels; it empowers local businesses, and ensures that every traveller departs with unforgettable memories and stories that are shared instantly across the world,” he said.
