Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform Minister Inge Zaamwani has appointed a new seven-member Board of Directors for the Fish Corporation of Namibia (Fishcor), with Teofilus Nghitila named chairperson.
Josefina Nekongo has been appointed deputy chairperson, while John Steytler, Edmund Buys, Ndeyapo K.O. Ekandjo, Epsom Jossop and Alisa Jacob will serve as board members.
Zaamwani formally handed over appointment letters to the new board, which has been tasked with strengthening governance, improving financial accountability and restoring public confidence in the state-owned corporation.
The board will also provide strategic oversight and monitor the implementation of Fishcor’s integrated business and strategic plans, with the finalisation of the corporation’s Integrated Strategic Business Plan among its immediate priorities.
“Fishcor requires strong governance, accountability and strategic leadership. The board has an important responsibility to restore confidence in the corporation and ensure that it operates effectively, transparently and in accordance with its mandate,” Zaamwani said.
She said the board must strengthen financial governance and internal controls and ensure that legal and governance matters are properly managed.
Zaamwani also called on board members to declare and appropriately manage any conflicts of interest.
She said Fishcor’s strategic direction should align with the Sixth National Development Plan (NDP6), particularly its priorities around sustainable economic development, food security and employment creation.
The new board will operate within the Companies Act, Fish Corporation of Namibia Act, Marine Resources Act and relevant fisheries policies, while overseeing management’s implementation of approved plans.
