Shoprite recorded the lowest overall basket cost among the seven retailers surveyed in September 2026, followed by Checkers and Choppies.

Shoprite’s basket came in at N$977.79, followed by Checkers at N$991.78. Choppies ranked third at N$1,008.78, while Metro recorded a basket cost of N$1,012.78. OK Foods came in at N$1,084.78, followed by Model at N$1,101.79. Spar was the most expensive of the seven retailers surveyed, with a total basket cost of N$1,165.29.

  • Shoprite recorded the lowest prices for Tastic Rice at N$35.99 for 2kg, Rama Butter at N$26.99 for 500g, tomatoes at N$26.99/kg and corned meat at N$24.00 for 300g. It also tied with Checkers on white bread, cooking oil, long-life milk, dishwashing liquid, eggs, and soap.
  • Checkers offered competitive prices on several everyday essentials, including white bread at N$11.99, 2L cooking oil at N$69.99 and 1L long-life full-cream milk at N$19.99. These were among the lowest prices recorded in the survey.
  • Metro recorded the lowest price for 2.5kg white sugar at N$52.99, 1.5kg Real Good chicken at N$76.99, Pasta Grande macaroni at N$69.99, Surf washing powder at N$54.99 and Aquafresh toothpaste at N$20.99. It also tied for the lowest price on cooking oil, dishwashing liquid, and canned pilchards.
  • Choppies recorded the lowest price for 2-ply toilet paper at N$59.99, onions at N$16.99/kg and potatoes at N$17.99/kg. Its pricing on these products helped keep its overall basket among the three cheapest.
  • Model offered the lowest price for Top Score Maize Meal at N$72.99 for 5kg and mince at N$80.00/kg. However, its higher prices on certain household products contributed to its overall basket cost of N$1,101.79.
  • OK Foods recorded the lowest price for Wellingtons Tomato Sauce at N$27.99 for 750ml, while Spar did not record the lowest price for any of the products surveyed and had the highest overall basket cost.

Conclusion & Consumer Takeaway

The September results show a N$187.50 difference between the cheapest and most expensive retailers’ baskets. Shoprite recorded the lowest basket at N$977.79, coming in N$13.99 below Checkers, while Spar was the most expensive at N$1,165.29.

For consumers, the results highlight the value of comparing prices before shopping. While Shoprite had the lowest overall basket, other retailers offered cheaper individual products, particularly Model for maize meal and mince, Metro for sugar and washing powder, and Choppies for selected vegetables and toilet paper. Households may therefore save by comparing prices across retailers, especially when purchasing groceries and household essentials in bulk.
