The Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) is targeting improved graduate employability and stronger links between higher education and industry as Professor Frednard Gideon takes over as Vice-Chancellor.
Gideon officially assumed office on 1 August 2026, with his tenure beginning as the university rolls out its Integrated Strategic Business Plan (ISBP) 2026–2030.
The five-year strategy identifies graduate employability, research, innovation and entrepreneurship among the areas NUST plans to strengthen as it seeks to increase its contribution to Namibia’s socio-economic development.
The university also plans to expand access to quality higher education and deepen international partnerships while positioning its academic programmes to respond to changing skills requirements.
“Under this strategic framework, NUST will accelerate efforts to expand access to quality higher education, strengthen research, innovation and entrepreneurship, deepen international partnerships, enhance graduate employability, and reinforce its contribution to Namibia’s socio-economic development,” the NUST Council said.
The Council said NUST intends to strengthen its position as Namibia’s leading institution for applied science and technology by delivering future-focused education, producing industry-ready graduates and developing solutions to national, regional and global challenges.
Gideon’s appointment places him at the centre of implementing the strategy over the next five years, with the Council highlighting his focus on innovation, digital transformation and strategic partnerships.
He brings more than 25 years of experience in higher education, including 17 years in academic leadership and 11 years in executive leadership at the University of Namibia (UNAM).
His experience includes university governance, strategic planning, research development, academic administration and stakeholder engagement.
Gideon was appointed Vice-Chancellor by the NUST Council on 29 April 2026.
He holds a PhD in Applied Mathematics, a Master of Science in Mathematics, a Bachelor of Science Honours in Applied Mathematics and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Physics. He also holds a Master of Business Administration.
