In August ‘24, OK Foods recorded the biggest price drop among retailers in Windhoek, with an overall basket decrease of 13.47% year-on-year.
Key contributors to this decrease included Beef Stew, which dropped from N$124.99 in ‘23 to N$99.99 in ‘24; Macaroni Pasta Polana, which decreased from N$107.99 in ‘23 to N$79.99 in ‘24; and Twinsaver Toilet Paper, which fell from N$96.99 in ‘23 to N$79.99 in ‘24.
In contrast, Choppies saw an overall basket increase of N$975.68, rising from N$894.80 in ‘23, marking an 8.29% year-on-year increase.
The increase was primarily driven by Cooking Oil (2 liters) increasing from N$69.99 in 2023 to N$76.99 in ‘24, Beef Stew rising from N$69.99 in 2023 to N$94.99 in ‘24, and Tomatoes per kilogram climbing from N$20.99 in ‘23 to N$39.95 in ‘24.
Woermann Brock followed with an overall basket decrease of 7.70%, securing third place. Pick ‘n Pay came in fourth with a 2.84% decrease, Checkers followed in fifth with a 2.34% decrease, Spar took sixth place with a 2.02% decrease, and Shoprite rounded out the group with a minimal decrease of 0.41%.
Among hypermarkets, Metro Hyper emerged as the most affordable with a month-on-month decrease of 12.43%, followed by Checkers with a 0.41% decrease from July to August ‘24. Woermann Brock, however, saw a basket increase of 2.79%.
The commodity spotlight for August ‘24 was on 2kg Rice (Mamas). Choppies offered the most affordable average price at N$43.06, followed by Spar at N$43.12, Shoprite at N$43.26, Pick ‘n Pay at N$43.96, Woermann Brock at N$44.48, OK Foods at N$45.99, and Checkers with the highest average at N$46.79.
Spar continues to sell their store brand cooking oil, while Choppies is expanding its options by now offering the Nola brand, which has been selected for the survey. Additionally, Choppies exhibited a basket decrease of 4.22%, while Spar demonstrated a month-on-month increase of 6.01%.
