Of the eight most popular grocery Supermarkets in Windhoek, Choppies offers the cheapest basket of standardised groceries.

This is according to our monthly grocery basket comparison conducted each month which started from the month of May 2023 with a revised basket in June. We carry out the survey to provide consumers with valuable insights into the price of a basket of 20 standardised groceries across eight supermarkets.

After analysing the November data, Choppies has emerged as the most cost-effective among the eight grocery retailers. Despite maintaining an affordable basket, their overall basket increased by 1.76% month-on-month, rising from N$900.8 to N$916.68.

This change is particularly noticeable in the price of their fresh Tomato per kilogramme, which surged from N$19.99 to N$34.95. Conversely, there was a significant decrease in the price of Onions per kilogramme, dropping from N$19.99 to N$9.95.

On the contrary, Spar emerged with a higher-priced overall basket, totaling N$1,029.81, reflecting a 1.73% increase from October to November. This change is attributed to the price hike in items such as Beef Stew, rising from N$89.99 to N$104.99, and fresh Tomato per kilogramme, increasing from N$47.99 to N$50.99.

OK Foods, traditionally ranked as the most expensive grocery retailer, experienced a notable decrease in November, with the basket cost plummeting by 4.77% to N$997.8 from N$1,047.8.

This reduction is observed in the prices of Beef Stew per kilogramme from N$124.99 to

N$89.99, Onions from N$24.99 to N$9.99, and Real Good Chicken from N$74.99 to N$71.99.

Pick ‘n Pay, Food Lover’s Market, and Woermann Brock each witnessed a month-on-month increase in their overall basket prices by 1%, 2.89%, and 1.55%, respectively.

Conversely, Shoprite and Checkers saw their overall basket prices rise between October and

November by 1.75% and 0.81%, respectively.

Our grocery basket is composed of the following:

Loaf of Bread

2-litre Nola sunflower oil

5kg Top score maize meal

2.5kg Marathon sugar (white sugar)

1.5kg Real Good Chicken

1kg Beef stew

500g Rama butter

18 Waldschmidt eggs (medium)

150g Protex bar soap
