Namibia and Belgium have sealed a deal to promote and develop cooperation in the field of green energy at the on-going COP26 Summit in Glasgow, Scotland, Mines and Energy minister Tom Alweendo has announced.

Alweendo signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with his Belgian counterpart, Tinne Van der Straeten on Wednesday.

“A sincere appreciation to Minister Tinne Van der Straeten for proposing the Belgian MoU on green hydrogen, which would be the first of its kind that Belgium signs with another country,” Alweendo said.

“In order to achieve our ambition to develop a green hydrogen economy in Namibia, synergetic partnerships and strategic alliances with reliable, knowledgeable and like-minded international partners are needed,” the Minister said.

Namibia’s agreement with Belgium comes as the country in August signed a Joint Communiqué of Intent to establish a German- Namibian hydrogen partnership, of which N$700 million in funding will be provided for cooperation within the framework of the partnership.

Namibia is banking on green hydrogen to attract more than US$6 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) which is anticipated to generate annual revenues in excess of US$800 million.
