Standard Bank Namibia backs greater participation of women in tech

Standard Bank Namibia says it is increasing its focus on developing women in technology as the banking sector becomes more reliant on artificial intelligence and other digital technologies.

The bank brought together women from its technology and digital teams as part of an initiative aimed at supporting career development, networking and greater female participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

Standard Bank Namibia Chief Technology Officer Allvan Farmer said greater diversity would be important as the bank increases its use of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence.

“The bank wants to be at the forefront of shaping how artificial intelligence can drive growth and development across Africa. Artificial intelligence gives us an opportunity to solve uniquely African problems with uniquely African solutions,” Farmer said.

He said AI could potentially be used to address challenges ranging from access to financial services to healthcare, economic development and business growth.

Farmer said developing these technologies would, however, require greater participation from people with different skills and backgrounds, including women.

“To realise this potential, we need diverse voices, perspectives and skills contributing to the development of these technologies. Creating opportunities for women to grow and lead in technology is not only about representation, but about driving better innovation and building solutions that positively impact our clients, communities and economy,” he said.

The programme included technology professionals and industry leaders who discussed career development, innovation and the challenges faced by women working in traditionally male-dominated fields.

The bank said the initiative also recognised women working in its technology operations, including those involved in developing and supporting its digital banking services.

Standard Bank Namibia Business Analyst Natasha du Plessis said bringing together women working across different areas of technology provided an opportunity to share experiences and challenges.

“While our roles, backgrounds and responsibilities may differ, we are united by a shared passion for technology, innovation and progress. Being surrounded by so many talented women in technology was both inspiring and empowering, and served as a powerful reminder of the significant impact women continue to make across the industry,” she said.

Standard Bank Namibia said it plans to continue investing in local technology skills and creating opportunities for women to take on greater roles in technology and digital banking.
