Conclusion & Consumer Takeaway
The August survey shows that Checkers offered the most affordable overall basket, although the margin over SuperSpar was relatively narrow.
The results also highlight an important difference between overall basket affordability and individual-product competitiveness. While Checkers had the cheapest basket, Woermann Fresh recorded the highest number of lowest or jointly lowest individual prices, demonstrating that a retailer can be highly competitive on selected products without necessarily having the cheapest overall basket.
With just N$89.00 separating the cheapest and most expensive baskets, consumers can potentially benefit from comparing prices across retailers, particularly when purchasing higher-value items such as chicken, sirloin steak, rice and household products.
