Of the eight most popular grocery Supermarkets in Windhoek, Choppies offers the cheapest basket of standardised groceries.
This is according to our monthly grocery basket comparison conducted each month which started from the month of May 2023. We carry out the survey to provide consumers with valuable insights into the price of a basket of 20 standardised groceries products across 8 supermarkets.

After analysing the data for the month of September, Choppies Basket surfaced as having the cheapest basket composition costing N$894.26. Moreover, exhibiting a slight decrease of -0.06% from the month of August to September.
Checkers for the month of September emerged as having the most expensive basket, costing N$1,103.81 an increase of 9.74% month on month. Notably coming from its Beef Stew per kilogram increasing significantly by N$199.00 from N$ 89.99.
Shoprite, FoodLover’s market and Pick n Pay overall basket increased month on month, by N$1.13, N$0.83 and N$0.58% respectively.
Inversely, Spar experienced a basket drop of 1.42%.
Checkers’ price for their beef stew exhibited fluctuations over the months, with a significant increase observed in September, rising from N$89.99 per kilogram to N$199.99 per kilogramme. The average price for Checkers’ beef stew over the four months is N$117.78 per kilogramme.
In contrast, OK foods price for its Beef stew item remained the same throughout the four-month survey period with a cost of N$124.99 and is now the second most expensive to Checkers.
Conversely, Choppies average price of their Beef Stew per kilogramme is N$76.74 significantly lower out of the eight retail stores in the survey.
Stores are evaluated and graded based on the range of products and services they provide to customers. This grading considers factors such as the variety and quality of items available, the convenience of the store’s location, and its overall appeal to shoppers.
Essentially, it’s a way to assess the comprehensiveness and attractiveness of a store’s offerings to help consumers make informed choices about where to shop.
In a conversation with Fredrick Mwinda, the salesperson at Woermann Brock Klein Windhoek, he mentions that the store rebranded to an A store.
“It is an A store, the rebrand was to give A store a different look from our Family store but yet they are all Woermann Brock, the only difference is that the offerings we have within the store is as per our consumers demand”.
The Woermann Brock branch in Khomasdal is recognized as a family store, and the one situated in Katutura Monte Cristo operates under the Woermann Brock Usave banner.
Note: We do not take specials or loyalty card discounts into consideration. When we do find certain goods on special, for example, “Get N$10.00 off when buying 18 (medium) eggs and pay N$55.00”, we will log the price as N$65.00 to exclude the special.
