MultiChoice says it will not be expanding its GOtv services to other towns in Namibia where they are not airing any time soon.

The broadcasting company says the further roll out will be an expensive exercise as it needs to set up transmitters, thus only confined to strategic townships.

“We shall not be expanding our GOtv services to other towns as we have new exciting developments, we wish to introduce on DSTV,” MultiChoice Namibia Managing Director Roger Gertze said.

“In addition, rolling out GoTV will require MultiChoice to invest in the construction of towers for transmission in every area we intend to expand to, and that still only covers a lesser radius, unlike with DTSV that uses satellite. Therefore, it would be too costly, hence that is why we decided to remain confined to the townships or areas where think we can get value for the investment,” Gertze said when queried whether they would consider the aspirations of other potential clients who require similar GOtv services but have no transmission in their respective areas.

GOtv is only available in Windhoek, Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Rundu, Ondangwa, Ongwediva, Eenhana, Okahandja, and Rehoboth.

Gertze said this during the launch of a new Supa+ package on Wednesday, which will now provide unlimited entertainment in addition to added soccer channels.

The Supa+ bouquet will cost N$459 consisting of over 85 channels, while the lowest GOtv lite package goes for N$100 for 25 stations.

Speaking of the Supa+ package, Gertze said this was prompted after thorough market research and also based on customers’ demands and needs for additional channels.

“When we started in 2012, we only had about 25 channels, but thanks to technology advancements, we are now able to offer more unlimited entertainment. The Supa+ package will include all Supersport channels to accommodate soccer lovers where all league games will be aired. We shall provide exclusive content offering diverse preferences to customers seeking a wider range of entertainment. It is even amazing to see more interest, from various backgrounds wanting a lot more,” he said.

In terms of pricing the MD said, as a business they buy content in foreign currency, which then affects pricing locally for various packages on both DSTV and GOtv.

“We are equally affected by what happens outside, however, we try by all means to source and provide our customers with the best content which is valuable. It also depends on the payments we receive as a determinant of content. We understand it is tough economic times, but we can assure you that what you’re paying is truly a guarantee for the value for your money,” he said.
