Gonzo takes reins at TransNamib amid CEO search

Webster Gonzo has been appointed as the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of TransNamib, effective from April 1, 2023, following the resignation of Johny Smith, who has been at the helm of the national rail institution for the last five years.

Gonzo, who has served as the Executive for Human Capital for over a decade, has been praised by TransNamib Chairperson Theo Mberirua for his strong leadership qualities.

“Gonzo has demonstrated strong leadership qualities in the organisation, and we are confident in his ability to steer the organisation throughout this period of change. His appointment as acting CEO comes at a pivotal time for TransNamib and we trust that he will be able to continue delivering on the implementation of the Integrated Strategic Business Plan,” said Mberirua.

The appointment of Gonzo comes as TransNamib has begun the process of recruiting a substantive CEO.

Smith, who declined a reported N$2.5 million offer to stay for another five years, has been appointed CEO of Grindrod Rail, effective April 1, 2023.

TransNamib, which operates the country’s rail and road transport infrastructure, has been working towards the implementation of its Integrated Strategic Business Plan, which seeks to modernize and improve the efficiency of the country’s transport system.

The appointment of Gonzo is expected to provide the necessary stability and continuity during the transition period.
