The Namibian Stock Exchange (NSX) registered its highest single-day trade on Friday when N$1.35 billion worth of shares exchanged hands.
The massive transaction on Friday surpassed the N$971.84 million single-day record set on 18 July 2022, which was then the biggest trade since 18 June 2018 when N$926,129.60 was traded in a single day.
The NSX’s fourth highest trade was recorded on 4 May 2017, when shares valued at N$751,068.96 were traded.
According to NSX data, Friday’s trade involved 55 deals of 20,330,743 shares, bringing the month-to-date overall value of trade on the exchange to N$1.42 billion and year-to-date value to about N$12 billion.
Anglo American recorded the highest value of shares traded on Friday, contributing N$202.6 million, followed by Standard Bank Group at N$189.8 million, Shoprite Holdings at N$174.1 million and FirstRand at N$170.8 million.
In April, the NSX also saw high value trades recorded, with close to N$800 million having changed hands on the bourse in a week, with a then record trade of N$391.22 million having been recorded in one day.
According to the Bank of Namibia (BoN) Quarterly Bulletin for September 2022, the market capitalisation of the 32 companies listed on the NSX increased by 6.57% year-on-year, while it declined by 19.1% quarter-on-quarter to N$2.06 trillion.
The Overall index of the NSX, according to BoN, increased significantly by 9.07% on an annual basis to close at 1,499.69 index points at the end of the second quarter of 2022.
Similarly, the local index increased by 10.9% on an annual basis to close at 492.56 index points at the end of the quarter under review, however, on a quarterly basis the overall and local index posted declines of 19.8% and 3.66% reflecting setbacks to most sub-indices.
