February 27, 2023

Botswana has removed VAT (Value Added Tax) on eight products including sanitary pads, cooking oil, infant formula and Liquefied Petroleum Gas, the country's Ministry of Finance has announced.

The changes will see VAT removed on salt, sanitary pads, vegetables, cooking oil, infant formula, condoms, baby diapers and Liquefied Petroleum Gas.

The Ministry said it plans to zero rate agricultural implements and condoms while exempting private health services from charging VAT.

The changes are part of the proposed amendments to the VAT and contained in the recent budget that stated that zero- rating would be rolled out on certain projects in order to provide targeted support to sustain livelihoods.

The Botswana Ministry of Finance said the list of VAT zero-rated or exempted items was being reviewed in order to include some and in future remove those whose inclusions is no longer justifiable.-mmegi
