Mobile Telecommunications Company (MTC) has made available N$23.6 million for the servicing of 707 plots in Okakarara.
The project is part of MTC’s corporate social investment towards the Development Workshops Namibia initiative to service land for local authorities and municipalities.
The project is currently servicing two extensions, namely Okakarara Extension 7, consisting of 294 plots for N$59,636 each with water, sewer and electricity, and Hamakari Extension 2, featuring 413 plots at N$14,602 per plot with water.
“The objective of the programme is to assist local authorities in planning and servicing land at a cost affordable to low-income earners. The programme is for urban residents who cannot afford a house for N$300,000 and above, which are the houses currently in the market and considered affordable. But with this project, people are now able to buy a plot with a title deed at a cost of between N$10,000 and N$40,000,” Development Workshop acting country manager Ester Veiko said.
The MTC Chief Human Capital, Corporate Affairs and Marketing Officer, Tim Ekandjo, invited banking institutions to meet low-income earners halfway towards realising their housing dreams.
“Now, it is up to the banks and other financial institutions to make it possible for these plot owners to build their homes on their plots. They should have packages tailored for low-income earners to be able to get financial assistance to build their houses on these plots,” said Ekandjo.
After the land servicing is concluded, the first residents will start building their houses, and the area is expected to develop into a residential neighbourhood within a few years.
MTC plans to deliver 1,941 low-cost housing plots, up from the initial target of 1,585, under its land delivery project.
The MTC Land Delivery Project is a three-year programme designed to address the issue of landlessness in selected towns by providing affordable land to low-income earners through Development Workshop Namibia.
The project aims to enable individuals to acquire a 300-square-metre piece of land at a price as low as N$15,000 that is payable over 12 months, own title deeds and gain access to financing for home construction.
