Namibia and Botswana are set to open the Trans-Kalahari/Mamuno border post as a 24-hour operator, in a move that is expected to boost economic development in the region.
The border post, situated in Namibia’s Omaheke region, is a crucial link between the port of Walvis Bay and Botswana’s capital, Gaborone.
According to Etienne Maritz, the Executive Director of Namibia’s Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security, the launch of the border post is a significant development for the region.
The launch of the 24-hour operation at the border post is expected to bring about a number of changes in the transport sector.
“Due to the launch of the 24-hour operation at these two border posts, transport companies are urged to temporarily cease the movement of trucks from 08h00 until 13h00. Alternatively, truck drivers are advised to use Ariamsvlei Border Post,” Maritz added.
The official launch of the 24-hour operation of the Trans-Kalahari/Mamuno Border Posts is scheduled for April 1, 2023, and will be attended by Namibia’s Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security, Albert Kawana, and Botswana’s Minister of Finance, Peggy Serame.
This latest development follows the launch of the use of National Identity Cards as travel documents between the two countries in February.
