The Dorob and Skeleton Coast National Park are set for a N$132.4-million infrastructure upgrade with the support from the German Government through KfW Development Bank.
The infrastructure and equipment will assist in the management of the National Parks in which they are situated and enhance biodiversity conservation.
The upgrades will comprise newly constructed park entrance gates, office buildings (tourist receptions), ablution facilities, information display services for visitors, new garages, and service buildings as well as staff accommodation (houses), among other things.
New park management stations will also be constructed at Cape Cross, Ugabmund, Möwe Bay and Springbokwasser to assist in the management of the National Parks in which they are situated and enhance biodiversity conservation.
“It is our collective conviction that the infrastructure and equipment will go a long way serving and promoting not only conservation but tourism development in the coastal areas of the country,” a joint statement from the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism and KfW said.
This comes as Environment, Forestry and Tourism has allocated N$80 million for development purposes for the 2023/24 financial year.
This amount is set to cater for the rehabilitation of old and new facilities as well as upgrading of tourist roads, sewerage and water supply in protected areas, including the fencing of national parks and conservancies, and forms part of the Ministry’s total budget of N$570,705,000, of which N$490,705,000 is earmarked for operations.
