OK Foods leads in Year-on-Year basket cost reduction in July

In July ‘24, OK Foods experienced the largest year-on-year basket cost decrease, dropping by 9.90%. The basket price reduced from N$ 1,098.80 in July ‘23 to N$ 999.80 in July ‘24.

A significant contributor to this decrease was the price of beef stew, which dropped by N$ 25.00, from N$ 124.99 in July ‘23 to N$ 99.99 in July ‘24.

Other items that contributed to the basket reduction include washing powder, which decreased from N$ 74.99 to N$ 66.99, and macaroni pasta, which decreased from N$ 116.99 to N$ 103.99.

Conversely, Choppies, which has been known for its affordable basket, saw a year-on-year increase of 4.70%. The basket cost rose from N$ 974.11 in July ‘23 to N$ 1,018.86 in July ‘24.

Items contributing to this increase include tomatoes, which went from N$ 19.99 per kilogram in July 2023 to N$ 31.95 in July ‘24, potatoes, which rose from N$ 18.99 to N$ 21.95 per kilogram, and beef stew, which increased from N$ 89.99 to N$ 94.99 per kilogram.

Checkers also experienced a significant basket cost reduction of 9.74%, followed by Spar with a 9.55% decrease, Woermann Brock with an 8.19% drop, and Shoprite with an 8.05% decrease. Pick ‘n Pay’s basket price also decreased, albeit marginally, by 1.59%.

Regarding the commodity for July ‘24, Top Score 5kg, Spar offered the lowest average price at N$ 66.50, followed by Shoprite at N$ 66.84, and Pick ‘n Pay at N$ 67.45. Choppies, Woermann Brock, and OK Foods followed with prices of N$ 69.91, N$ 72.22, and N$ 73.70, respectively.

In the hypermarket category, Woermann Brock emerged as the most affordable, with a basket decrease of 2.01%, followed by Checkers with a slight decrease of 0.1%. Metro was the least affordable, with a basket increase of 12.01%.

700ml Wellington tomato sauce

1kg Sunlight Washing powder

 750ml Sunlight dishwashing liquid

500g Rama Butter

18 Waldschmidt eggs (medium)

150g Protex bar soap

100ml Colgate toothpaste

1kg Onions

 kg Potatoes

1kg Tomatoes

Note: We do not take specials or loyalty card discounts into consideration. When we find certain goods on special, for example, “Get N$10.00 off when buying 18 (medium) eggs and pay N$55.00”, we will log the price as N$65.00 to exclude the special.
