President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has appointed seven new regional governors and directed that all their future engagements with institutions must be cleared through the Office of the President.
The appointments, complete the full slate of regional governors under the current administration.
The new governors are Pijoo Nganate for Omaheke Region, Kadiva Diana Hamutumwa for Ohangwena Region, Hofni Iipinge for Oshana Region, Natalia Goagoses for Erongo Region, Dorothy Mareka-Kabula for Zambezi Region, David Gerze for ǁKharas Region, and Immanuel Shikongo for Omusati Region.
Alongside the appointments, Nandi-Ndaitwah issued a directive requiring that all invitations extended to regional governors be routed through her office.
The measure, she said, is intended to curb unnecessary inter-regional travel and ensure better coordination with ministries and government agencies.
“This will help us determine whether such invitations align with their official duties or are simply for leisure,” she said.
Addressing the new governors, the President urged them to focus on the pressing needs of their regions, including youth unemployment, food insecurity, housing and land shortages, and uneven development.
“I expect you to be available at all times to address the challenges facing your respective regions, in close consultation with offices, ministries, and agencies,” she said.
“I recently issued a circular to all governors, reminding you that you are appointed to serve your own regions.”
Nandi-Ndaitwah also underscored the governors’ responsibility in delivering on the ruling SWAPO Party’s 2024 Election Manifesto and preparing for the implementation of the National Development Plan 6 (NDP6), which outlines seven priority areas and eight economic enablers.
She further urged the regional leaders to maintain strong working relationships with local authorities, traditional leaders, youth and religious groups, and the private sector.
“I therefore urge all of you to take your responsibilities seriously and serve in the best interest of all Namibians,” she said.
“Let us stand united in our commitment to improving service delivery and working together for a brighter future for our nation.”
