Mobile Telecommunications Ltd (MTC) says it has invested N$4 million since 2021 in helping its employees start side businesses through its in-house Dreamers Programme.
The initiative, launched three years ago, provides funding and business training to employees – referred to by the company as “ambassadors” – who are building part-time ventures alongside their full-time roles.
According to MTC’s Chief Brand, Marketing, Communications, and Sustainability Officer, Tim Ekandjo, the programme has so far benefited 80 staff members.
“The MTC Dreamers Programme was established in 2021 to aid by means of funds and entrepreneurial training for employees who are actively pursuing their own dreams and aspirations of owning their own businesses as side hassles,” said Ekandjo.
“Thus far, the programme has assisted eighty MTC ambassadors at the cost of N$4 million.”
Ekandjo said the company has set aside N$950,000 this year to support 18 staff members across three categories: entrepreneurship, talent development, and social causes.
Thirteen employees each received N$50,000 for business ventures, four were awarded N$30,000 for talent development, while one employee received N$60,000 to support a social initiative.
All recipients according to MTC , also undergo a three-day entrepreneurship training.
Staff according to the telco ,are required to pitch their business ideas before an internal panel that evaluates and selects the final recipients.
Some past beneficiaries say the programme has had a direct impact on their lives.
Hilaria Nghiikoko, who now runs a mini-market in Okongo, said the support enabled her to earn additional income and create jobs in her community.
“As a former beneficiary, I am grateful for the support to pursue my personal dream of owning my own business. Now, I am not just able to earn an extra income, but I have also managed to create employment opportunities for others and add value in society,” she said.
Another beneficiary, Bertha Nangombe, said the backing she received will help her grow a project aimed at clothing and feeding vulnerable people.
“This is an opportunity that I am taking very seriously, and excited to be expanding my social project,” she said.
