Nine women appointed as ministers in Nandi-Ndaitwah’s first cabinet

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has appointed a female-dominated Cabinet, with nine women among the 14 appointments announced, marking a historic shift in Namibia’s leadership.

The announcement was made at State House in Windhoek on Saturday as she introduced her new administration.

Lucia Witbooi has been appointed as Vice President, making her the second-highest-ranking official in the government.

Elijah Ngurare takes up the role of Prime Minister, while Natangwe Ithete will serve as both Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Mines and Energy.

Erica Shafudah has been named Minister of Finance.

Selma Ashipala-Musavyi will lead the Ministry of International Relations, while Albert Hengari has been appointed Minister of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform.

Emma Theofelus retains her position as Minister of Information and Communication Technology, and Festus Mbandeka continues as Attorney General.

Frans Kapofi remains Minister of Defence.

Veikko Nekundi has been named Minister of Works and Transport, and Fillemon Wise Immanuel will serve as Minister of Justice.

Lucia Iipumbu has been appointed Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety, and Security.

James Sankwasa has been named Minister of Urban and Rural Development, while Esperance Luvindao will take over as Minister of Health and Social Services.

Indileni Daniel will lead the Ministry of Environment, with Sanet Steenkamp taking charge of the Ministry of Education.

Emma Katema has been appointed Minister of Gender Equality.

Kaire Mbeunde has been named head of the National Planning Commission.
