Oil major Shell has announced that its Cullinan-1X exploration well, offshore Namibia, did not yield a commercial oil and gas discovery.

The Cullinan-1X probe, located approximately 60 kilometers north of the Lesedi-1X exploration well and close to the border with the Galp-operated block, was drilled by the Deepsea Bollsta.

“The well did not result in a discovery, however, we are encouraged to have found indications of a working petroleum system in this previously untested area of our license,” Shell said according to Reuters.

Shell has since plugged and abandoned the well and will analyze the data gathered before deciding on any follow-up activities.

In recent years, Shell, in collaboration with its partners QatarEnergy and Namibia’s national oil company, has made four oil discoveries in Namibia, including the Graff and Jonker wells.

Shell Namibia Upstream B.V in May entered into a N$1.7 billion contract extension with Northern Ocean for continued work in the country using the Deepsea Bollsta.

The Shell deal is scheduled to run from December 2023 to June 2024 and includes an additional option for a six-month extension at a cost of N$1.6 billion. The Brief/Reuters
