South Africa’s Minister of Electricity, Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, is scheduled to arrive in Namibia on Friday, leading a delegation which includes officials from Eskom.
During his visit to Namibia, Ramokgopa is expected to engage in discussions with Namibia’s Minister of Mines and Energy, Tom Alweendo.
Representatives from NamPower, NAMCOR, and the Green Hydrogen Implementation office will also be part of the Namibian team.
Namibia currently imports electricity from South Africa through NamPower. The country has reduced its firm electricity consumption from Eskom by half, now only utilizing 100MW. Additionally, there is a non-firm arrangement for 300MW, which is not accessible during load-shedding or emergency situations.
Ramokgopa was last in Namibia in January in his previous capacity as the Head of the Investment and Infrastructure Office at The Presidency in South Africa. During this visit, he engaged with Green Hydrogen Commissioner James Mnyupe to explore the potential for a partnership in developing green hydrogen initiatives, including the joint establishment of a Green Hydrogen corridor.
The neighboring country also harbors plans to emerge as a significant green hydrogen exporter, driven by the implementation of the Boegoebaai hydrogen power project.
