Preliminary results show that 96% of civil servants voted to go on strike during the two-day voting process that began on Thursday and ended on Friday.

A total of 81 853 were eligible voters and only 43 794 cast their votes.

According to the preliminary, 42216 voted for Yes and 1232 against the strike, with 346 spoiled or rejected votes.

The Khomas region according to preliminary tallied results recorded the highest turnout, with 6513 votes cast.

The Kavango East and Zambezi regions recorded the highest yes vote of 98% and 97.6% respectively.

Namibia National Teachers Union (NANTU) Deputy President, Thomas Niilonga, who was the election national returning officer, confirmed that about 96% of those that were eligible to vote, had voted yes, adding that official statistics will be released tomorrow (Monday).

“Those are just preliminary results, a comprehensive update will be done tomorrow (Monday) by the senior leadership,” he told The Brief.

On the way forward, Niilonga said once the results are made official, then the Unions will approach the labour commissioner to determine the strike rules.

“After that process we will then inform the government, notifying when the strike will begin,” he said.
