Shoprite launches new stand-alone clothing brand

March 30, 2023

South Africa’s biggest retailer, the Shoprite Group, is expanding and launching a clothing store brand.

Shoprite said that the brand will be called UNIQ and focus on providing customers with simplicity, comfort, superior fabrics and value.

The first UNIQ store is open in Cape Town’s Canal Walk shopping centre, with eight more stores scheduled to open over the next month.

Shoprite said that UNIQ will cater for the entire family and consist of premium basics sold in various fabrics and colours that are easy to mix and match, with every item of clothing designed and made to last.

UNIQ will be the first South African clothing retailer to introduce Supima cotton to the mass market, which is stronger, softer, and absorbs colour better than regular cotton.

It said that the premium quality launch range includes an extensive collection of t-shirts,  luxurious womenswear, modern menswear, children’s basics, responsibly sourced puffer jackets, and quality underwear for men and women.

UNIQ will also be the first clothing retailer in South Africa to offer self-service checkout, with smart stages and frequency identification (RFID), allowing customers to scan and pay for items easily.

The group said that the self-service checkout offering is in line with its commitment to convenience through innovation.

It added that each new store will create an average of nine new jobs, with well-trained employees assisting customers on the sales floor.
