More than 80 built environment professionals from across Africa gathered in Swakopmund last week to discuss the future of quantity surveying, with industry leaders calling for greater adoption of digital technologies, sustainable construction practices and regional collaboration.

Hosted by the Institute of Namibian Quantity Surveyors (INQS) in partnership with the Association of African Quantity Surveyors (AAQS), the INQS & AAQS Conference 2026 brought together delegates from Kenya, Nigeria, Zambia, Uganda, Malawi, Ghana, Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa under the theme, “QS Quo Vadis? Technology, Transformation and Tomorrow.”

Held at the Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment Centre on 24 July, the conference formed part of a week-long programme aimed at strengthening professional cooperation and advancing the quantity surveying profession across the continent.

Discussions focused on the impact of artificial intelligence, Building Information Modelling (BIM), digital transformation, sustainable infrastructure, construction risk management and contract administration on the future of the built environment sector.

Deputy Minister of Works and Transport Hans Haikali officially opened the conference, highlighting the role of the construction and built environment sectors in supporting infrastructure development and economic growth.

Swakopmund Mayor Suama Kautondokwa also addressed delegates, underscoring the importance of collaboration between government, industry and professional bodies in developing the sector.

Institute of Namibian Quantity Surveyors President Frikkie Jordaan said the conference demonstrated the importance of innovation and collaboration in preparing the profession for a rapidly changing construction industry.

“The INQS & AAQS Conference 2026 has demonstrated the power of partnership, innovation and leadership in shaping the future of quantity surveying in Africa. As technology continues to transform the built environment, our profession must remain agile, forward-thinking and committed to excellence,” Jordaan said.

He said the conference provided a platform for professionals to exchange best practices, explore practical solutions to industry challenges and strengthen regional cooperation.

The event also included panel discussions, technical presentations and networking sessions aimed at promoting knowledge sharing and supporting the development of young quantity surveyors entering the profession.

Organisers said the conference concluded with a commitment to deepen collaboration among African quantity surveying professionals, accelerate the adoption of digital technologies and strengthen the profession’s role in delivering sustainable infrastructure across the continent.
