Travel smart, stay safe and plan ahead this festive season

The holiday season is almost here, and for many Namibians, that means road trips to the North, relaxing at the coast, or crossing the border for a well-deserved holiday.

As we get excited about travelling, packing, and spending time with loved ones, there’s one important thing we shouldn’t forget: staying safe and prepared for the unexpected.

The reality is that accidents, breakdowns and theft can happen when we least expect them – even during holidays. That’s why short-term insurance isn’t just a “nice-to-have”. It’s your backup plan when things take a wrong turn.

Short-term insurance covers more than people think. Yes, it protects your car and home, but it can also cover your luggage, personal items, and sometimes even unexpected travel cancellations. Imagine having your car damaged on the road or discovering your bags were stolen – insurance helps make sure you’re not left stranded or stressed.

Before you travel this holiday season, take a few minutes to check your cover:

• Is your car insured for long distance travel?

• Are your valuables listed on your policy?

• Is your home secured and covered under your policy?

These simple checks can save you a lot of trouble when you’re far from home.

Remember, safe travel starts with smart driving. Namibia’s long, quiet roads can be dangerous if we’re tired, driving too fast, or distracted. Make sure that your car is road-ready, that your tyres are in good shape, and that your lights are working.

Avoid taking unnecessary chances, take regular breaks, and put your phone away when driving. To make the trip more comfortable, make plans in advance if you’re travelling with family, especially with small children.

Keep a first aid kit in the car, bring water and snacks, and let someone you trust know your route. Being safe is always better than being sorry.

Insurance is about confidence, not just money. It lets you enjoy your vacation without worrying about possible problems. It’s being aware that you’re prepared for any unexpected turn in life. And in a season where joy should be the focus, that kind of security is priceless.

Before you start your journey, take a moment to prepare. Check your insurance, plan your route, and travel with care. Because the best holidays are not just about where you go; they’re about getting there safely and coming back with good memories, not regrets.

As the rainy season approaches, you’re encouraged to take proactive steps to safeguard your home, vehicles and valuables from potential damage.

Simple steps such as inspecting and repairing roofs, clearing gutters and downpipes of leaves and debris, and trimming overhanging branches can significantly reduce the risk of leaks, flooding, and structural damage. Homeowners should ensure proper drainage around their property and elevate items in low-lying areas prone to water accumulation.

Motorists are also advised to prepare their vehicles by replacing worn-out wiper blades, checking tyre thread and brakes, and ensure that drivers licences and vehicle licence disks are renewed before hitting the road. Most importantly, avoid driving through flowing or flooded rivers and roads, as water levels can rise rapidly and pose severe risks to both life and vehicles. By planning ahead and staying alert throughout the season, you can minimize losses and enjoy peace of mind.

At the end of the day, insurance isn’t only about money – it’s about peace of mind. It allows you to enjoy your holiday with confidence, knowing that if life surprises you, you’re protected.

So, before you hit the road, prepare wisely, check your cover, and travel safely. The best holidays are the ones where we arrive safely, enjoy fully, and come home with beautiful memories – not regrets.
