Choppies reclaims Most Affordability Lead in June 2025

In June 2025, Choppies re-emerged as the most affordable retailer, with a total grocery basket cost of N$1,063.78, making it N$7.00 cheaper than last month’s most affordable basket. Whereas OK Foods emerged as the priciest with a total basket cost of N$1,157.78, resulting in a N$94.00 difference between the two baskets.

Choppies emerged as the most affordable retailer this month. Despite not recording the largest overall price drop, its pricing remained competitive enough to secure the top spot. Out of a total of 22 items surveyed, the prices of 8 items remained unchanged, 8 items prices decreased, and 6 items prices increased.

Despite a modest 1.1% increase, Shoprite managed the rank of second most affordable, with only a N$18.00 difference between it and Choppies.

Pick n Pay saw the largest total basket cost drop with its basket decreasing by 4.8, resulting in it moving up a rank and earning a spot in the top 3 most affordable retailers.

Despite a 1.8% decrease in its total basket cost compared to last month, OK Foods dropped a rank and became this month’s most expensive retailer.

Notable Price increases and drops:

Increases:

  • Pick N Pay: Sunlight Dish Washing Liquid increased by 21.0%, from N$32.99 to N$39.99
  • Spar: Wellingtons Tomato Sauce increased by 15.0%, from N$33.99 to N$38.99
  • OK Foods: Rama Butter increased by 10.0%, from N$29.99 to N$32.99

Decreases:

  • Pick N Pay: Soap decreased by 25.0%, from N$15.99 to N$11.99
  • OK Foods: Potatoes decreased by 15.6%, from N$31.99 to N$26.99
  • Checkers: Tastic Rice decreased by 15.0% from N$54.99 to N$46.99

Commodity Spotlight: Sunlight Dishwashing Liquid 750ml

Sunlight Dishwashing Liquid, an everyday essential, relatively maintains the same price range across all 7 selected retailers, with only a N$6.00 difference between the cheapest and most expensive prices.

  • Choppies retains the lead as the most affordable retailer, offering the Sunlight Dishwashing Liquid at just N$36.99.
  • Metro, Shoprite, and Checkers all come in at N$37.99, demonstrating strong price alignment and competitive positioning.
  • OK Foods rounds out the list as the least affordable, with the item priced at N$42.99.
