Telecom awards employees 4% wage increment

Telecom Namibia (Telecom) says it has approved a 4% wage increment to its employees effective October 2022.

The increment comes as Telecom employees earlier this year held a peaceful demonstration where they handed the Deputy Chairperson of the Telecom Board, Amanda Hauuanga a petition with a list of demands.

The demands included, amongst other things, that Telecom pay the employees performance bonuses for 2021/2022 in full with immediate effect.

Telecom, Namibia Post and Telecom Holdings (NPTH) and the Namibia Public Workers Union (NAPWU) concluded the wages and salaries negotiations on 12 October 2023.

“We are pleased that the negotiations have been concluded successfully. This agreement shows our commitment to investing in our people and caring for their well-being,” said Telecom CEO Stanley Shanapinda.

According to details of the agreement, in addition to the 4% increase, the daily allowance has been increased by N$50, while subsistence and travelling allowance for a hotel stay and private stay has been increased by N$45 and normal standby allowance has been increased by N$6.

The housing qualifying amount has also been increased by N$100,000 across the board.

“The employer medical aid contribution, transport allowance, and ICT telephone rebates for all employees and pensioners remain at the current rates,” the telco said.

The agreement, according to the company, further upholds the provisions of the Namibian Labour Act of 2007 regarding severance pay at early retirement.
