The board of directors of the Communications Regulatory Authority of Namibia (CRAN) has signed a performance and governance agreement with the Minister of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
This comes after the Minister appointed a new board to serve for a period of 3 years, effective from the 1st of May 2023.
The new board is headed by Prof. Tulimevava Mufeti and supported by Elvis Nashilongo as the deputy chair.
The other members of the board include Florette Nakusera from the Namibia Deposit Guarantee Authority, Jeanine du Toit, Gerhard Coeln, Alletha Haufiku, and Veiko Alexander.
“We thank the Honourable Minister for entrusting us with this important national task of regulating this robust industry for the benefit of all Namibians. We are dedicated to achieving this with transparency and excellent corporate governance principles. We affirm our commitment to working in harmony, addressing challenges with determination, and seizing opportunities with enthusiasm,” said board chairperson, Dr. Tulimevava Mufeti.
Mufeti said that the authority’s high ethical values and strong corporate governance structures and principles will drive its success.
“CRAN maintains fruitful relationships with key stakeholders such as MICT and embodies all aspects of its values, including Accountability, Passion, Teamwork, Respect, and Innovation,” Mufeti said.
The board is required to sign the agreement under Section 11 of the Public Enterprises Governance Act (No. 1 of 2019), which states that a portfolio and/or shareholding Minister of a Board of a public enterprise being constituted must enter into Governance and Performance Agreements with the Board.
As part of their duties, the Board will be responsible for the overall direction and strategic oversight of CRAN, ensuring that the core objectives of CRAN remain relevant and applicable. The Board will be assessed on an annual basis and will provide a performance report to the Minister on how it has succeeded in achieving the strategic objectives of CRAN.
CRAN is responsible for regulating telecommunications services and networks, including broadcasting, postal services, and the entire radio spectrum.
