Namibia’s hospitality sector sees continued decline in room, bed occupancy rates

Thirty-three Gondwana establishments are recipients of the Booking.com Traveller Review Awards for 2023.

The Booking.com Traveller Review Awards honour hospitality businesses from 220 countries for consistently providing excellent services over the course of the year, based on a pool of over 240 million verified customer reviews on Booking.com for more than 1.3 million accommodation partners.

Guests rate the overall experience at a property by selecting a score from 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest.

Gondwana’s Desert Whisper received the highest accolade, scoring a 10 out of 10 in the ratings, and was ranked as exceptional. These ratings are based on the average score of the past three years, as determined by guests who rate their overall experience at a property on a scale of one to 10, with 10 being the highest score.

“It’s that personal attention to detail when checking in or sharing helpful recommendations to explore the destination like a local that demonstrates how our partners show up and shine for travelers in a multitude of ways each and every day. These awards are our way of thanking them for their dedication to making everyone feel welcome and to going out of their way to create incredible experiences for our customers. Whether it’s a friendly greeting from a taxi driver at the airport, sharing some local driving tips at the car rental counter or a thoughtful note waiting in the room, our passionate partners help make every trip more special,” SVP and Chief Marketing Officer for Booking.com Arjan Dijk said.

This comes as Namibia’s tourist arrivals are on the mend, with the country having recorded an annual average occupancy rate of 40.1% in 2022 across hospitality establishments countrywide, which is almost double the annual average in 2021 and since June 2022, it has reached about 80% of pre-pandemic levels.

With Namibia’s tourism on the rebound, the sector is forecast to be one of the biggest drivers of economic activity in 2023, according to economic firm Simonis Storm.
