NamPower has inaugurated its first fully owned and operated renewable energy plant, the Omburu 20 MW PV Power Station.
The power station located on the outskirts of Omaruru, was constructed by HopSol Africa, a unit of Alpha Namibia Industries Renewable Power Limited and is expected to have capacity to power around 18,500 homes.
This comes as the solar plant was connected to the national grid in March, 2022.
The Solar PV plant was built at a cost of N$317 million from initial project estimates of N$500 million.
The total installed capacity of utility-scale solar PV plants with NamPower as the off-taker, currently stand at 146.5 MW, with capacity expected to increase in the short to medium term from customers within the Modified Single Buyer (MSB) Market Framework introduced by the Electricity Control Board.
As per the National Integrated Recourse Plan (NIRP), Namibia is targeting to increase the commercial installed renewable energy generation in the country from the current 150MW to 760MW by 2025.
